We are just about to start upgrading our XSL templates to Velocity and have been advised that it might be better to upgrade our 6.1 installation to 6.5.2 beforehand.
Does anyone have any experience of whether it’s better to make the change to Velocity before or after going to 6.5.2? And what the benefits and/or drawbacks might be?

There isn’t a great deal of difference in template management between 6.1 and 6.5. The principal thing you’ll find different is that we use new version of JEXL and Velocity in 6.5.x
Although the differences are not large, I think you’re almost always best off developing on the newest system that you can tolerate working on. Obviously, if something isn’t yet stable, trying to actual development on it would be painful.
Of course, this just my opinion. Perhaps some customers have some real experiences with upgrades to share.
