I want to make sure staff who are adding content to the site make sure they edit pages in Editor Mode and not in Design Mode (which is TOO easy to overlook). But can you tell me apart from the general permission definition found in the help section of this site, what are the permissions for editors in editing templates? managing memberships for secures sections, etc? Are these only for Admins?

Design Mode is only available to roles “Administrator” and “Designer”. If you have users with “Editor” and/or “Contributor” roles, they will not be seeing the Design Tab in the main drop down. You can test this by creating a test user, assign them an Editor Role and log-in to CM1 with those credentials to see.
