Cancelled Java update 51 breaks EditLive

This one is a bit strange. Using 7.3 with most recent patch: Users who refused/cancelled the Java upgrade to 7.51 started getting a blank Ephox EditLive box in Design and Code tabs, even though content was present and could be viewed in the Preview tab. Any entry in Design vanishes when switching between tabs.

However, if a user is not prompted to upgrade, EditLive works as normal.

Upgrading to 7.51 fixes the issue.

That is odd and good to know. Thanks for posting. We have also had a few reports where users had to clear Java and Browser caches after the 7u51 upgrade in some cases.

Oracle also has one bug active with the update that affects Firefox only that we are tracking and testing https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8027809. We haven’t been able to consistently reproduce this, it reportedly surfaced with Impact analysis for one user.

I am willing to bet that 99% of problems encounter with a Java update are caused by the version of the “Java 7” installed on their machine getting out of sync with the version of the “Java Plug-In” used by their browser.

On our campus, Rhythmyx users indeed use different versions and setups of their “Java” and different versions of different browsers. So when a new Java update is released, it causes “some type of problem” for “some of our users”.

This procedure fixes their “out of sync” situation:
Close all browsers.
In Start> Control panel > Programs … Erase all lines “Java 7” and “Java FX”
Give them access to the latest java (jre-7u51-windows-i586.exe) and double-click on it.
(Java will open a browser window to “verify”. Do nothing. Close Browser.)
In Start> Control panel > Java 32 bits > Security …
Select “Average” level , and click on “Modify site list…” add your site (https://myrxsite.edu)
Close Control Panel
If using FF, start it, select Tools > Modules. Check that the version of “Java Platform SE 7” is the latest one (Update 51). If not update it.
Close FF and restart it. Visit your Rx site.
If using IE, start it. Visit your Rx site.
