Is it possible to configure Workflow -> checkin so that the user doesn’t get the popup when they checkin? I am able to suppress it for transitions in the workflow (selected Comment: ‘Do not show’), but that has no effect on checkins.

I do know that this is possible. I did it for a customer a couple of years ago, but I’m having trouble remembering exactly who and how I did it.
I recall that I had to edit one or more of the XSL files in the content editor support applications (which of course will not survive an upgrade).
