I’m trying to setup a content type that will use the sys_contentstartdate, and I would like to set a default value to the current date. Can anyone give me some guidance on this?

It should be that way out of the box. If not, use the workbench to change the default value to the sys_DateFormat extension. Leaving the supplied date blank causes it to use the current date.
