I’m a little unclear on the question. Are trying to switch to a different “Display Format”, or to edit the Display Format whose name is “Default”?
Editing the “Default” display format (to show different columns, etc) will affect all folders/views/searches that use this format.
Switching to a different display format only affects that particular folder/view/search

We have a customised display format which shows among other things content id and community. We want this to be the default view for everyone everywhere.
Looks like the easiest thing would be to just custimise the default to include the fields in our other display view.
