how does the ContentStatus.pubDate field get populated and how do you output this as a field in your content so that it appears in the published file?

sorry i should think my question out properly before posting.
I have snippets for an RSS feed and want to use the publish date to populate the pubDate element of the RSS Item. Obviously snippets themselves never get published so does this field never get populated?
similarly for my RSS Feed item i want to populate the lastBuildDate with the ContentPublishDate of that item.
