Transaction rolled back because it has been marked as rollback-only

I’m getting the following message returned when trying to preview a content list:

Transaction rolled back because it has been marked as rollback-only

Any ideas what this means?

We’ve had that same message countless times, caused by numerous different problems. It is particularly galling that it talks about “transactions” and “rolling back” when previewing, which is surely a read-only operation, whereas critical operations involving writing to the database can screw up halfway through and don’t roll back!

You are more likely to find a hint at the cause in the console and/or velocity logs.
